Mercer Island men’s baseball and soccer advance to state semifinals
Mercer Island High School’s baseball and men’s soccer teams advanced to the 3A State Semifinals with a handful of wins over the weekend.
The baseball players beat Bainbridge, 8-0, and Auburn, 6-1, May 21 at the state tournament. They will next face top-ranked West Seattle at 7 p.m. on May 27 at Gesa Stadium in Pasco.
Against Bainbridge, MI pitcher Austin Cupic took the win throwing seven innings and striking out 12 without a walk, and the Islanders received two hits each from Chris Mock, Kaden Wu, Jack Varney and Halen Otte.
Pitcher Evan Otte picked up the win against Auburn while pitching seven innings for six-and-a-thirds. From home plate, Wu and Marques Abulhosn each had two hits.
On the boys’ side, the Islanders beat Stadium 3-1 on May 20 and Lincoln (Seattle) 2-1 on May 21 at the state tournament. They will next face Monroe at 2 p.m. on May 27 at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.
Against Stadium, Cooper Gersch scored two shots on goal and Kaleb Rawson scored a goal. In the Lincoln game, Gersch and Brady Gilroy scored and goaltender Jackson Barker saved a PK.
