On Sunday, May 29, the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series opens with the first race of the PPB Balls to the Wall 50 for 358 Modifieds at Grandview Speedway. The SpeedSTRs will also be on the race card which starts at 7:30 p.m. Bonus money is posted for drivers who race in the top ten at laps 30 and 40 plus a $5,000 PPB bonus for any driver who leads laps 30, 40 and 50. GT Radiators once again offered 200 $ to the winner of each modified set and the consolation. Drivers must be pre-registered to be eligible for the bonus and there is no registration fee. To pre-register, call 443 513 4456.
Tickets can also be ordered in advance by calling 443 513 4456. Please speak clearly, provide your name and the number of tickets you need. Tickets can be paid for and collected on race night at the call window at 4:30 p.m. Advance ticket holders may enter the grandstand at this time. General admission tickets go on sale at 5 p.m.
This first edition of the Balls to the Wall 50 is a very unique format and thanks to Pioneer Pole Buildings, there is a possible payout of $13,000 to the winner. It’s a reverse race where the second is not enough! This event is a high paying short distance strategy race that will work this way.
After a series of modified qualifying events, the top twelve drivers will draw lots to determine the Ball to the Wall 50 lap starting line. For cars outside the top twelve, they will line up directly to their qualifying positions.
It all seems pretty routine so far, but it all gets really interesting when we hit lap 30. This reverse race will give a bonus to the top ten drivers on lap 30 and lap 40 by paying $1,500 to the leader, $400 for the second, $200 for the third, $100 for the fourth and $50 going from the fifth to the tenth.
So it sounds simple enough, but wait, there’s a twist. The yellow flag will slow the field on laps 30 and 40 and the top four cars will reverse. The leader drops to fourth place and the fourth-place car advances to pole. All other pilots maintain their positions. The event will run with double file restarts until round 48. It will certainly mix things up and challenge all drivers to their own strategy for the second half of the 50 laps.
With the base purse being $5,000 to win all 50 PPB Balls to the Wall rounds, rounds 30 and 40 will win an additional $3,000, making it an eye-catching $8,000 win. But wait, there’s better. If a driver completes the 30, 40, and 50 head spin sweep, they earn the additional $5,000 PPB that will go to the winner, making it a payday of $13,000. It will be a “Balls to the Wall” event that will guarantee $1,000 for the tenth and $500 just for starting the featured event. Duane Howard explains it this way: “What a unique event, leading and winning the 30th lap only to return handicapped to the second row to try again and again, the drivers will have to drag them on the high banks! It’s gonna be fun “.
To be eligible for the draw and for the bonus displayed, drivers must pre-register by calling 443-513-4456. Admission is free. Please provide the driver’s name and phone number.
Several drivers will duplicate and expected SpeedSTR entries include Billy Pauch Jr, Ryan Krachun, Briggs Danner, Alex Bright, Tim Buckwalter, Tom Mayberry and Richie Tobias Jr. to name a few.
Some drivers who have commented positively on the format and are pre-registered include Brett Kressley, Doug Manmiller, Craig VonDohren, Duane Howard, Jeff Strunk, Billy Pauch Jr, Kevin Hirthler and Louden Reimert. To collect the $13,000 from this event, running second is not enough! This event will also be the first of two Tri-Track events at Grandview that are part of the six-race Tri-Track series presented in conjunction with Big Diamond and BAPS Speedway.
The Thunder Series continues Tuesday, June 14 with the Jesse Hockett Classic USAC Non-Wing Sprint National Tour, joined by the 358 Modified at the second Tri-Track Series event at Grandview.
Tuesday, June 28 will feature the Red Robin PA 410 Sprint Speed Week Greg Hodnett Cup paying $10,000 to be won at the Levan Machine & Truck Equipment party. The Modified 358s will be part of this ever-popular spectacle with qualifying heats and a 30-lap streak. This event honors the memory of Greg Hodnett, one of the most respected sprint car drivers of all time and former Thunder on the Hill Sprint Champion.
Then on Tuesday night August 2, the Triple Roaring 20’s for Big Block/358 Modifieds sharing the program with the Sportsman. Once again, Bob Greene and Pioneer Pole Buildings will be offering a $5,000 bonus to any driver who sweeps the triple 20s and a $1,000 bonus to a driver who wins two of the triple 20s. Each feature will pay $2,000 for win, so it’s possible to pocket $11,000 for the sweep. Race times are set at 7:30 p.m.
